How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on PlushPouch starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our fryer guides, that means what you cook, how many people you feed and where the fryer will be used.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your cooking and your space

Fries for two, a fish fry for a crowd and a holiday turkey each need a different fryer.

A propane fryer is built for outdoor use, so your yard matters too.

We check the oil capacity, the basket or turkey size and the fuel type the maker lists. When your plans limit the choice, we say what to look for.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at oil capacity, basket size, the turkey weight limit the maker states, oil filtration and draining, power or burner output, the lid and cord, and how the parts clean up.

T-fal, Hamilton Beach, Presto, Masterbuilt and Char-Broil describe their fryers in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a fryer. We look for patterns, like oil that leaks, baskets that are too small, lids that drip, controls that run hot, short cords and parts that are hard to clean.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell similar fryers under similar names, so we check each model name and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any fryer with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every fryer we cover.

Hot oil can cause serious burns and fires, so we point you to the maker's manual and give no oil amounts or temperatures of our own. Propane and gas fryers are for outdoor use only, never on a wooden deck, in a garage or under an overhang.

A turkey must be fully thawed and dry before it goes into hot oil. We make no promise that any fryer is safe, and we don't call any fryer healthier.
